Universal File Interface (UFI) PDF Print E-mail

A demo that uses UFI to access wind speeds can be seen here.

We've developed a product that addresses one of the main objections we hear from “technologists” (e.g., scientists, engineers, and other researchers) who avoid using databases to manage their data, specifically "my very large data files are too cumbersome/difficult/slow/costly to load into a database".  These files come in a variety of formats, including HDF5, NetCDF, GRIB, NITFS, and FITS. At BCS we have developed a solution to this problem.  We call it the Universal File Interface (UFI); it's a database extension based on the IBM Informix Virtual Table Interface (VTI).  (Please continue reading even if you don't have Informix running on your system, because IBM has made available, at no charge, the Innovator-C edition of Informix.)

DBXten - A DataBase eXtension for Data Sequences Print E-mail

Why DBXten?

For a database application that stores and accesses very large sequences of data, why not use a server extension that, on average:

  • speeds up insertion of rows by a factor of 3
  • decreases your index sizes by a factor of 600
  • generates these indexes more than 60 times faster
  • decreases your database table sizes by a factor of 10
  • decreases your total database size by a factor of 25

while dramatically improving data retrieval times for single and concurrent queries.

The Grid DataBlade - A Database Extension for Manipulating Gridded Data Print E-mail

Why the Grid DataBlade?

For database applications involving storage and manipulation of gridded data, where

  • data volumes are too large to be kept in memory, or
  • data extractions are small relative to the amount of data stored, or
  • the data needs some form of resampling
BCS's Grid DataBlade is the natural choice for effectiveness, speed, and convenience of use. This technology can:
  • efficiently handle very large multidimensional gridded datasets
  • speed up the extraction of data products 50-fold or more
  • rapidly generate subsampled data along parallel or oblique axes
