Barrodale Computing Services Relaunches Free BC-STV Website
Victoria, British Columbia - February 23, 2009 - Barrodale Computing Services Ltd. (BCS), a provider of advanced software solutions since 1978, today announced
that it has relaunched its free web-based simulation tool to
assist British Columbia citizens in making an informed choice in the
May 12 referendum. “It’s important for voters to become familiar
before May 12 with BC-STV - the proportional electoral system
recommended by the Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform,” says Dr.
Ian Barrodale, President of BCS.
“Although there are several informative websites that describe BC-STV,
we are not aware of any other website that allows everyone, from
lay people to political scientists, to simulate election outcomes based
on user-defined scenarios,” says Barrodale. “We produced this Java
applet by programming the rules for BC-STV defined in the Citizens'
Assembly Technical Report. Our primary goal in undertaking this project
has been to help fellow citizens familiarize themselves with BC-STV
before casting their vote for its adoption or rejection on May 12.” If
adopted, BC-STV will replace the current system in future elections.
BCS collaborated on this BC-STV project with Dr. Anthony Quas, who
holds a Canada Research Chair in the Department of Mathematics and
Statistics at the University of Victoria.
